Chapter 23

We agreed that banishing was the best solution for our Kaydon problem. Dad and Malcolm kept their opinions out of the discussion. I figured they both knew it was a necessary, albeit somewhat harsh, task.

Valerie consented to being bait. Henry, Jax and I trailed a safe distance behind her as the sun set and she walked to where Kaydon was staying. She knocked on the door, clasped her hands and hung her head, pretending at sheepishness, as it swung open. “Kaydon,” she said, batting her eyelashes and gazing up. “I’ve changed my mind. Can we talk?”

He stood in the door frame and flashed a wicked grin. “I’m glad you’ve come to your senses,” he said as he reached out and grabbed her arm. “You’ll never leave my side again.” He yanked, and she stumbled forward. She dug in her heels and pulled back, making him tug harder.

“We need to do something,” Henry whispered from my side as we hid in the shadows between the house and the next.

He was right; Valerie had suffered enough. I nodded and stepped into the moonlight. “Think again, Kaydon. Valerie isn’t staying with you.”

He cackled like a madman. “Valerie is mine!”

I set my jaw and stared him down, my arms crossed against my chest. The Kaydon I’d known was easily swayed. Intimidation should’ve worked.

“My sister,” Henry seethed as he ran to the door. “Is not a piece of property.”

As Kaydon’s attention flicked between Henry and me, Jax skirted along the side of the neighbouring house, lasso in hand, and sprang at Kaydon with more dexterity than he’d shown in the tower fight. In one smooth motion, he flung the rope over Kaydon and pulled it tight, pining Kaydon’s arms to his side. The force freed Valerie’s arm, and she spat.

Fury erupted in Kaydon’s eyes. He opened his mouth, but Juna, standing behind him rubbing her bleary eyes, spoke. “What’s going on?”

“Valerie’s lackeys are trying to keep her from me!” Kaydon screamed as he struggled against the rope that Jax was knotting around his middle.

“I’ll never go with you,” Valerie said. Her repentant expression was gone, replaced by a fury almost scarier than Kaydon’s.

Juna stopped rubbing her eyes as she noticed Jax. “Why are you tying him up?”

“He betrayed us to the Government,” I said. “He told them where we are.”

Juna’s eyes widened. “The van,” she breathed. “I’ll help you.” She wrapped her arms around Kaydon, stilling his thrashing body. Her strength outdid his by a fair measure, and she made fast work of subduing him.

Jax pulled more ropes from his pocket and wrapped them around various parts of Kaydon’s body. Henry and I checked to see if the knots were secure. When Jax finished tying Kaydon up, I rolled a rag, stuffed it in his mouth and tied the ends around his head to stop the stream of angry words leaving his lips. I couldn’t wait to be rid of him. He was nothing but trouble, and I had enough of that from other, more dangerous, sources.
